Huntsville, AL (March 5, 1997) - Sirsi Corporation announces the installation of its popular UNICORN library automation system for the WEBnet Consortium. Comprised of four separate colleges located in Massachusetts, WEBnet members include the Horn Library, at Babson College in Babson Park; the Solomon R. Baker Library, at Bentley College in Waltham; the Annenberg Library & Communications Center, at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill; and the Regis College Library, at Regis College in Weston. As a member of WEBnet, students, faculty, and staff can access nearly 500,000 items through the on-line catalog and the Internet, which provide easy information access and timely delivery services. The group is migrating from a Dynix system.
The libraries have installed UNICORN on an IBM RISC System/6000 host computer. The consortium has selected SIRSI's InfoVIEW graphical client with Z39.50 for Windows. In addition to providing a consistent graphical interface to all staff and patron modules licensed by the consortium, InfoVIEW also provides URL hyperlinks from within the UNICORN catalog to multimedia resources. The ability to access other WWW sites directly from the on-line public access catalog using WebCat's client is a feature enjoyed by all WEBnet consortium patrons. The windows-based screens and functions provide patrons with a searching environment that is both familiar and consistent with other electronic resources they commonly use.
The computerized WEBnet Catalog lists over 400,000 books, videos, audiocassettes, and reference materials available within all four colleges. The network provides delivery of its resource materials twice a week and a fax transmission of journal articles. Students have access to 3,800 periodical subscriptions and to audiovisual materials that include video cassettes, laser discs, compact discs, curriculum kits, and educational software.
