Unicorn installed at Wilderness Coast Public Libraries

Huntsville, AL (September 27, 1996). Sirsi Corporation announced today the installation of UNICORN at Wilderness Coast Public Libraries, based in Crawfordville, Florida. UNICORN is installed on a on an IBM RISC System/6000 Model 250 host computer.

SIRSI's Unicorn Collection Management System, using client/server technology, simplifies and improves the process of managing and accessing library holdings. Its UNIX base allows the flexibility of choosing different platforms, all of which operate with the same software. Its modular design enables users to build on the system's core Z39.50-compliant catalog, choosing and configuring additional modules according to local library needs. According to Cheryl Turner, Central Administrator, Wilderness Coast "chose SIRSI as its automation provider because of UNICORN's ease of use and reliability."

The Wilderness Coast Public Libraries system was established in October, 1992, as an administrative office for the cooperative multi-county library system for Wakulla, Jefferson, and Franklin counties. The Jefferson County Public Library is migrating from a Follett system, but the Wakulla and Franklin County Public Libraries are automating for the first time. The system serves over 35,000 residents with a combined collection of approximately 50,000 items in its four libraries and two bookmobiles. A large part of the automation funding is provided by a federal Library Services and Construction Act grant, and the remainder is provided by the Wilderness Coast Public Libraries.
