Huntsville, AL (May 20, 1996) - Sirsi Corporation announced today the installation of UNICORN at Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, based in Christiansburg, Virginia.
SIRSI's Unicorn Collection Management System, using client/server technology, simplifies and improves the process of managing and accessing library holdings. Its UNIX base allows the flexibility of choosing different platforms, all of which operate with the same software. Its modular design enables users to build on the system's core Z39.50-compliant catalog, choosing and configuring additional modules according to local library needs.
Unicorn is installed on an IBM RISC System/6000 Model C20 host computer. The library has selected SIRSI's InfoVIEW graphical client with Z39.50 for Windows. In addition to providing a consistent graphical interface to all staff and patron modules licensed by the library, InfoVIEW also provides URL hyperlinks from within the UNICORN catalog to multi-media resources. Montgomery-Floyd has also licensed SIRSI's award-winning WebCat for OPAC access via the World Wide Web.
The design of UNICORN most appealed to the library, according to Karen Dillon, Library Director. "UNICORN is extremely intuitive, and we were impressed with the logic behind the design. We felt it was important that SIRSI's customer base is diversified, including all types of libraries."
Consisting of the main library in Christiansburg and branches in Floyd and Blacksburg, the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library serves 31,000 registered users in two Virginia counties. The libraries have 60 employees and a collection of over 150,000 items. Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library also participates in the Blacksburg Electronic Village, a cooperative project that links citizens, via computers, to each other and to the Internet.
