Huntsville, Alabama (May 31, 1995). SIRSI is pleased to announce that its STILAS and Unicorn library automation systems have been installed at four sites around the country. SIRSI's Unicorn Collection Management System and Scientific and Technical Information Library Automation System (STILAS) are UNIX-based, client/server systems providing automation solutions for all library tasks. A UNIX base allows both systems to run on a wide range of hardware platforms and networks. Modules can be combined and configured to serve the needs of any library environment.
Unicorn is installed on a SUN Sparc 10 host computer at the newest AT&T Global Information Solutions corporate library in El Segundo, California.
"Unicorn fits well into our existing technical UNIX environment," said Doris Helfer, Library Director, "and it is able to speak to PC as well as UNIX users. Also, our technical staff is very pleased with the support they have received from SIRSI."
AT&T Global Information Solutions provides high-end system users with massively parallel processing machines for the analysis of data and data trends. The company also provides a wide range of solutions to major corporations. Founded two years ago, the library houses over 5,000 volumes and 135 serials subscriptions in the subject areas of computer sciences and business reference.
Located at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, the Defense Systems Management College's David D. Acker Library is running STILAS on a SUN SparcStation.
A Department of Defense education branch, the Defense Systems Management College trains the armed forces acquisitions corps. The Acker Library houses a collection that includes 18,000 books, 4,000 documents, and 4,000 technical reports covering program management and defense acquisitions.
The capability of STILAS to support both LC MARC and the government's COSATI technical report format was a critical factor in selecting STILAS. Having this information incorporated into a single database is a major advantage for researchers.
Unicorn is installed at the 11 sites of the Lackawanna County Library System. Unicorn is installed on an IBM RISC System/6000 Model C10 host computer at the Scranton Public Library, and the remaining sites access the system via dedicated phone lines.
After evaluation by staff from all system libraries, SIRSI was "the clear choice" for the library system's first automation project, according to Sally Felix, Administrator for the library system. "The staff was impressed with the easy-to-understand, user-friendly interface of the public access catalog and the Circulation Module. From an administration standpoint, we liked the UNIX-based system, which allows Unicorn to run on an IBM hardware platform."
The Lackawanna County Library System serves over 220,000 people in northeastern Pennsylvania. The total collection of the libraries is approximately 326,000 volumes. The 11 sites are the Scranton Public Library and three branches (Scranton), the Children's Library (Scranton), the Abington Community Library (Clarks Summit), the Carbondale Public Library (Carbondale), the Dalton Community Library (Dalton), the Interboro Public Library (Peckville), the North Pocono Public Library (Moscow), and the Taylor Public Library (Taylor). The library system administration office, located in Scranton, will also have access to Unicorn.
The Arizona Health Sciences Library in Tucson, Arizona has migrated to Unicorn from the LS/2000 system.
Unicorn's client/server architecture, implemented in 1982, was a significant factor in its choice, according to Rachael Anderson, Library Director. "We believe that client/server architecture is the way of the future, and SIRSI has a committed client/server track record. SIRSI is very responsive to the needs of the health sciences community as well as to our needs as a resource library."
The Arizona Health Sciences Library serves all the health profession schools of the University of Arizona as well as the University Medical Center. It is also the designated resource library for the state of Arizona. The library houses a collection of over 200,000 volumes and a large non-print collection, including multimedia and software. Running on a DEC 3000 Model 600S host computer, Unicorn is accessible via campus network, dial-in, and Internet.
Founded in 1979, SIRSI is one of the leading suppliers of client/server information automation software for UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh platforms within academic, public, legal, medical, governmental, and corporate environments.
