PROVO, Utah. epixtech, inc., formerly Ameritech Library Services, today announced the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has selected epixtech as its library automation vendor. TDSB is the third largest school district in North America serving 330,000 students, in 565 schools with up to 2000 simultaneous users.
"The flexible client-server architecture and extensive functionality provided by the Horizon system makes it an ideal choice for a large school district," said Lana Porter, president and chief executive officer of epixtech. "The Toronto District School Board will be able to customize screens for each school and create hot button links to other products such as online databases and Web sites. Horizon is also ideal for students who are accustomed to working in graphical environments and provides seamless integration to the Internet."
The choice of epixtech as the school district's automation vendor will also make it easier for students to move between TDSB libraries and the Toronto Public Library System. Toronto Public Library, with an annual circulation of more than 28 million, has recently completed installation of an epixtech's library automation system at all 98 of its branches.
Marguerite Jackson, director of the Toronto School Board said, "Amalgamating six different library systems is a large and complicated project. The Horizon system will allow the TDSB to make full use of its wide area network infrastructure and allow students to access school library catalogs and online databases from any network workstation. This will provide equity of access to school library print and electronic materials throughout the TDSB."
TDSB was formed in 1998 when six school boards within the boundaries of the Greater Toronto Area were combined. The various school boards were operating on different legacy systems and TDSB conducted an extensive review of library systems before deciding to use the Horizon system from epixtech. TDSB has also purchased PC Reliance and Media Scheduling.
