Vanderbilt University to install UNICORN

Huntsville, AL (April 15, 1996) - Sirsi Corporation announced today the license of UNICORN to Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt University previously was a NOTIS Horizon pre-release site, but chose to install the full Unicorn Collection Management System from SIRSI after Ameritech's decision to stop development on Vanderbilt's version of Horizon.

SIRSI's Unicorn Collection Management System, using client/server technology, simplifies and improves the process of managing and accessing library holdings. Its UNIX base allows the flexibility of choosing different platforms, all of which operate with the same software. Its modular design enables users to build on the system's core Z39.50-compliant catalog, choosing and configuring additional modules according to local library needs.

Vanderbilt University will install UNICORN on a Sun SPARCenter 2000 computer system. The library has selected SIRSI's InfoVIEW graphical client with Z39.50 for Windows, the InfoVIEW graphical client for MacIntosh, InfoVIEW for X-Windows, and SIRSI's award-winning WebCat for World Wide Web access to Vanderbilt's collection. In addition to offering a consistent graphical interface to all staff and patron modules licensed by the library, InfoVIEW also provides URL hyperlinks from within the UNICORN catalog to multi-media resources. Vanderbilt will refer to their system internally as Acorn, a name they chose to represent their library systems.

Vanderbilt University is a private, comprehensive teaching and research institution with a diverse student body of over 10,000 and a faculty of over 1,600 full-time members. The Jean and Alexander Heard Library is composed of nine libraries, where growing collections of over 2.3 million volumes, 2.5 million microform items, and more than 17,000 currently received serial titles are housed.
