UK University invests in information system

DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, March 1999 -- The University of Hertfordshire is buying a new library information system that will give its students one of the best services in the UK. It will be employed in the university's new 16 million Learning Resources Centre, already the most sophisticated integrated library and computer centre in the country. From there it will serve all of the university's campuses and its Associate Colleges.

Introduction of the Voyager system will, says Di Martin, Director of Learning and Information Services, give the university first-rate facilities for information discovery, delivery and management. She said: "We will be the first British site for the system. It really is a leap into the 21st century and we are all very excited by the possibilities that its introduction opens up by offering a totally seamless service for our users."

The university is committed to developing its academic computing and library services to provide cutting edge facilities that the student of the next decade will need to succeed at university and to prepare them for their careers. "Arrival of the Voyager system, is the latest step in a long and successful history of utilization of computer and communication technology," added Di Martin

The easy access service will take users into:

  • Book and journal collections at UH
  • Bibliographic indexes, tables of contents
  • Links to web-sites and internet resources
  • Full-text electronic journals and digitized materials
  • Images, video and audio resources
  • Library catalogues
  • Links to teaching and learning materials
  • Search tools capable of sweeping across several databases simultaneously
  • Help screens and tutorials.

Voyager will be installed this July, ready for the new academic year in September.

The university's LRC has been opened for about 18 months and is the largest such facility in the UK, operating on four floors with a 'footprint' the size of a football pitch.

The university takes considerable pride in its track record of innovative technology in the field of library and computer services. In the 60s and 70s it launched pioneering work in computer networking, computer services, library automation and co-operative ventures. The early 80s brought local area networks, client server architecture, CD-ROM networks, paralleled by a commitment to effective delivery of electronic information.

In the 90s the university became a focal point of library technology with its annual Libtech International event the premier annual exhibition in its field. This eventually outgrew the campus and is relocating this month to Olympia in London, having been acquired by an international exhibition and conference organization.

Based in Des Plaines, Illinois, Endeavor Information Systems Incorporated is an employee-owned information technology company formed in September, 1994.
