Lyngsoe Systems Library Solutions is proud to announce that Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon successfully launched our Intelligent Material Management System (IMMS) on Tuesday, May 6.

Multnomah County Library signed on to IMMS in 2021, sparking development of a new integration with SirsiDynix's Symphony ILS. Following initial development, core staff at Multnomah County Library collaborated closely with teams from Lyngsoe and SirsiDynix for two years to test and fine-tune the integration, delivering long-term benefits for all future Symphony libraries.

"Multnomah County Library's staff are bright and talented. Their passion, knowledge and dedication to the project helped ensure a seamless implementation," said Brandon Wolf, IMMS Project Manager. "This project truly showcases the magic of IMMS, demonstrating how it can efficiently manage a collection with the help of a media hotel, a new concept for many libraries. I can't wait for others in North America to see it in action!"

A standout feature of Multnomah County Library's IMMS implementation is the scale of its media hotel. With over 8 miles of shelving and capacity for up to 500,000 items, it is the largest of any IMMS system to date. The media hotel provides breathing space for the library collection, ensuring that materials remain accessible to patrons without overcrowding shelves. With Multnomah County Library circulating more than 17 million items annually, IMMS automatically distributes items from the media hotel daily to restock shelves at each location and provide a great browsing experience for patrons.

Library staff are excited to see the benefits of IMMS across the system. Right from day one, staff have experienced easier holds retrieval, increased variety of collection items flowing into their locations, and more transparent tracking of materials.

Dave Ratliff, Interim Deputy Director of Multnomah County Library, stated, "In my experience, IMMS stands out as a groundbreaking technological advancement for libraries. Its potential to guarantee that shelves are full and even high-demand materials are readily available, is a game changer for library operations."

Shawn Andary, Symphony Product Manager at SirsiDynix comments "We are excited to see Multnomah County Library's Symphony-Lyngsoe IMMS integration in production. Going forward, library staff will benefit from improved management of their collection while continuing to harness Symphony's robust, dependable functionality. Between our forthcoming Symphony 4.2.0 release, which will enhance the integration even further, and close collaboration with Multnomah County Library and others implementing IMMS, the future is bright for Symphony-IMMS libraries."
