Hershey, PA -- November 4, 2024. IGI Global Scientific Publishing, a leading international publisher of academic research with nearly 200 gold open access journals (https://www.igi-global.com/journals/) has partnered with dozens of organizations, including many other academic presses, in support of United2Act's Consensus Statement (https://united2act.org/#consensus). As a signatory, the publisher affirms a commitment to advancing actions against paper mills and pledges to apply the principles of this initiative to its own publishing processes and content strategy.
IGI Global Scientific Publishing recognizes that the integrity of scholarly publishing is jeopardized by the rise of paper mills, harming legitimate researchers, publishers, and academic libraries alike. As a publisher that is academician-founded, it continues a tradition of putting the academic community and research integrity first. In addition to ensuring a rigorous double-anonymized peer review process for every publication, the publishing house has further enriched its vetting process with additional strict verifications on author and reviewer credentials, including mandating ORCID iDs upon manuscript submission and reviewer appointment. Its journal program is currently welcoming article submissions from qualified researchers worldwide, across three broad subjects: Business & Management; Science, Technology, and Medicine; and Education & Social Sciences (https://www.igi-global.com/publish/call-for-papers/search/?dt=journal-articles).
"We are proud to collaborate with United2Act and our esteemed peers in the academic community to safeguard the integrity of scholarly publishing. By joining efforts against the rise of papermills, it reflects a collective dedication to combatting the challenges posed by paper mills, ensuring that genuine research thrives and receives the recognition it deserves," states Grace Long, Managing Editor of Journal Development for IGI Global Science Publishing.
United2Act is a joint project with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (https://publicationethics.org) and the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) (https://stm-assoc.org) and has formed a group of international stakeholders working collaboratively to address the collective challenge of paper mills in scholarly publishing. The group recognizes that collective effort is needed because no individual stakeholder can solve this problem alone. Their focus is on several key actions to address this problem, including increasing education and awareness; improving post-publication corrections; catalyzing research on paper mills; developing trust markers; and facilitating dialogue between stakeholders.
As paper mills can be extremely difficult to track and hold individuals accountable for this unsavory research practice, every fraudulent paper released by any publisher has negative ripple effects on the entire academic community. This is why IGI Global Scientific Publishing is proud to sign with United2Act and be part of the solution. The new collaborative effort fits well with the publisher's existing practices and their Open Access Journal Program's (https://www.igi-global.com/journals/open-access/) strict publication standards.
