NISO publishes update to Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) Standard 1.4

NISO

Baltimore, MD -- October 31, 2024. NISO is pleased to announce publication of an update to the Journal Article Tag Suite Standard (1.4), ANSI/NISO Z39.96-2024.

Last revised in 2019, JATS defines a suite of XML structures describing the content of journal articles using a common format that enables the exchange of that content between publishers and archives. It is intended to preserve intellectual content of journals independent of the form in which the content was originally delivered, and to enable an archive to capture structural and semantic components of existing material. JATS has been adopted widely by journals publishers from around the world and is required or supported by many archives as well as web-hosting and conversion vendors. The updated standard introduces important changes to meet evolving needs and practices in scholarly communications.

"This update, while remaining compatible with older versions of JATS, incorporates many changes made in response to feedback from the wider community," said Jeffrey Beck, Literature Program Head at the National Library of Medicine and co-chair of the JATS Standing Committee. "For example, it provides additional details on institutional affiliations and collaboration information and can now describe anonymous peer review."

B. Tommie Usdin, President of Mulberry Technologies, Inc. and co-chair of the JATS Standing Committee, added, "An especially important feature of the new revision is its ability to model multilingual documents. Many articles include substantial portions of text in two or more languages, and we can now better accommodate this content."

"We are excited to publish this new revision of JATS," stated Todd Carpenter, NISO Executive Director. "The JATS standard has become foundational to the exchange of scholarly information, and we are grateful to members of the Committee for their work to ensure that it continues to reflect the needs of the information community."

The NISO JATS 1.4 revision is freely available at https://niso.org/standards-committees/jats. Those interested in learning more can also attend a free Open Teleconference on Monday, November 18, at 3:00 pm Eastern (US/Canada).
