Press Release: Public Knowledge Project [October 28, 2024]

Public Knowledge Project Joins the Open Book Collective

Public Knowledge Project

Public Knowledge Project is a research and software development project at Simon Fraser University that builds free and open-source software (FOSS) dedicated to increasing scholarly publishing access, quality, inclusion, and diversity. PKP is also known for developing and maintaining OMP (Open Monograph Press), OJS (Open Journal Systems) and OPS (Open Preprint Systems), as well as conducting research, and providing support for open infrastructure to increase the quality, diversity, and accessibility of scholarly publishing.

The PKP-OMP Supporter Program is advancing the development of enhanced functionalities for Open Monograph Press (OMP), an open-source, end-to-end platform for publishing scholarly books. This initiative aims to improve usability, accessibility, and integration with indexing services, providing greater visibility for books using OMP. Additionally, the program offers expanded community education resources to support emerging open book publishers. Learn more about PKP's Open Monograph Press on the PKP website.

The OBC envisions the creation of a diverse and sustainable future for open access (OA), and service provider members are crucial to that. We believe in collectivism, non-competition, and moving away from Book Processing Charges. The OBC gathers together a range of OA presses and publishing service provider initiatives that fit our membership criteria, creating a trusted group of OA initiatives for libraries to support, and for authors and readers to explore. In this way, the OBC assists publishers in securing sustainable revenue streams to fund a fair and diverse future for OA books.

If you are a service provider working in line with our values and are interested in learning more and joining the OBC to strengthen the community of OA initiatives and access collective funding, feel free to contact our outreach team or apply directly.
