Coherent Digital announces Living Archive of LGBTQ+ Voices and the Fight for Social Justice

Coherent Digital

Coherent Digital LLC today announced the launch of LGBTQ+ Social Justice and Culture, the first collection dedicated to indexing and capturing content documenting the voices and achievements of the LGBTQ+ movement from the 1980s to today. The project aims to distinguish itself from collections of earlier history, focusing on recent and current publications and new-media output—including art, music, blogs, podcasts, videos, Twitter/X feeds, reports, and social media.

The initiative is dedicated to preserving LGBTQ+ efforts that document contemporary activism, culture, and movements for social change. It's a living project that will continue to grow.

"Every day, millions of individuals contribute to LGBTQ+ advocacy through blogs, tweets, videos, underground publications, zines, and other formats," said Bob Lester, the project's editor. "But many of these rich cultural expressions are scattered and at risk of disappearing. Coherent's mission is to ensure that these contributions are preserved, indexed, and made accessible for future generations."

The project is global in scope and includes content from over 1,000 LGBTQ+ organizations across more than 100 countries, with special attention to those operating in countries where rights are under threat. The collection draws on respected sources such as The InterPride Directory; expert advisers are helping to identify additional key organizations, media, and individuals shaping the movement.

Stephen Rhind-Tutt, Coherent's president, said, "We've included genuine and diverse viewpoints that are often overlooked by mainstream media, so that public debate can be informed by firsthand accounts from within the community. We want these lived experiences to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities and diversity within the community."

LGBTQ+ Social Justice and Culture will launch in beta on November 11 with an index of 100,000 items and over 200,000 pages of content. Coherent Digital invites libraries to join the initiative and asks people to contact blester@coherentdigital.net for more information.
