The National Library of Sweden will implement two free and open library software solutions: the Library Service Platform FOLIO and discovery solution VuFind, both open-source software.
FOLIO is an open platform used by libraries around the world. Its modular approach and modern architecture gives ample support for integration and the flexibility needed to manage workflows at the National Library of Sweden. VuFind is an established product with good functionality, providing adaptability and integration support. The National Library of Sweden will soon be tendering support, development and implementation services for these two systems.
The new software is expected to support current and future needs at The National Library of Sweden, and additionally meet rapidly increasing expectation from both staff and end users on improved workflows, modern and adaptable interfaces, simple system administration and modernised metadata management. Implementation of the new system will take place in 2025.
Background
In March 2023 the National Library of Sweden launched an internal inquiry to explore options for replacing the current integrated library system and discovery system, Ex Libris' Aleph and Primo. Required features of new library systems were open-source structure, in-house hosting at the National Library of Sweden, and linked data (BIBFRAME) capabilities. BIBFRAME underpins the in-house production of Libris since 2018, the Swedish union catalogue for all publicly funded libraries in Sweden which strives to implement linked data where possible. It follows thereby that a new system must be independent of the MARC21 format.
During 2023 the project evaluated several scenarios and potential software, and proposals for systems architecture. In parallel with other activities, a workflow analysis was conducted, resulting in scenario mappings and information modelling – covering both current processes and defining areas for possible future improvements. The National Library of Sweden has after thorough consideration of options concluded that the best solution for the library is the combination of FOLIO as the Library Service Platform, with VuFind as the end user discovery interface.
