San Francisco, CA -- October 10, 2023. Kanopy, the leading streaming provider of essential films for colleges and universities, announced the addition of the critically-acclaimed documentary Subject. An official selection of the Camden International Film Festival, Tribeca Festival, AFI Fest and more than 60 others, Subject is an important addition to course curriculum. The film explores the often-murky ethical dilemmas and complex relationships that can exist between documentary filmmakers and their real-life participants in such films as Hoop Dreams, The Wolfpack, Capturing the Friedmans, The Square and The Staircase. Subject was acquired for distribution by Kanopy in partnership with Greenwich Entertainment, who will handle all non-library releases.
Librarians and faculty in North American colleges can preview the film at no cost through Kanopy during an exclusive pre-theatrical window from October 30 through November 3 by logging into the platform. Colleges interested in adding Kanopy can talk to an expert to see how to gain access. Kanopy is an OverDrive company and an excellent complement to the ebooks, audiobooks and magazines available through the Libby reading app.
Librarians, faculty and students are invited to participate in a live Q&A on Wednesday, November 1 with the co-directors Jen Tiexiera and Camilla Hall as well as producer and key participant Margie Ratliff. The film will be released in theatres on November 3 while Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD), DVD, educational and public library streaming via Kanopy will begin December 5.
"Since the premiere of Subject, we have shown our film across campuses all over the world," said co-directors Jennifer Tiexiera and Camilla Hall. "We've seen the passion and hunger from young filmmakers to unpack the ethics of documentary filmmaking and are so excited to reach more students across the country through this partnership."
Jason Tyrrell, General Manager of Kanopy, added, "Subject is a must-see for college and university students, educators and staff exploring the impact of documentary cinema on its participants and audiences. The film is sure to expand critical conversations in classrooms, across campuses and online via Kanopy."
Tyrrell continued, "With documentary film and series experiencing a surge in popularity like never before, it's necessary that we take the time to remember that these are real people, experiencing real moments of success and trauma. Filmmakers have an obligation both to their participants and audiences to bring a clear moral compass to their work. Subject gives documentary participants the opportunity to relay the impact of participation on their lives like never before, and Kanopy is thrilled to partner with Greenwich Entertainment to help the film find the widest possible audience."
