Chicago, IL -- August 21, 2023. September marks Library Card Sign-up Month, an annual celebration initiated by the American Library Association (ALA) in 1987, aiming to spotlight the myriad of ways a library card can empower individuals and enrich communities. During the month, ALA and libraries across the country will once again join forces to encourage people of all ages to sign up for a library card and check out all the great services libraries offer.
"Libraries are not merely repositories of books and information; they are dynamic centers that foster creativity, inspire lifelong learning, and nurture the spirit of exploration," said ALA President Emily Drabinski. "A library card is an unlimited passport to a world of possibilities. You gain access to life changing resources beyond literature—from broadband internet and cutting-edge technology to museum passes and workshops, just to name a few. This month and every month, I encourage everyone to visit their library and utilize these wonderful resources."
This year, more than ever, ALA is emphasizing the value of libraries and the profound impact these institutions have on individuals and their communities. Through its #HowILibrary campaign, the ALA is urging library patrons to share how libraries have influenced their lives—whether it's a lasting interaction with a librarian, a treasured recollection of moments within library aisles, or how they've simply benefitted from their local library.
Interested participants can post anytime in September. ALA encourages participants to tag ALA on Facebook (@AmericanLibraryAssociation), Instagram (@americanlibraryassociation), and/or X (@ALAlibrary), along with the hashtag, #HowILibrary. One randomly selected social media post will win a $150 gift card and three second-place winners will receive a poster of their choice from the ALA Store. In partnership with Disney, ALA will also randomly select winners for an ultimate prize package that will include e-readers, books from their online catalog, a one-year Disney+ subscription and more.
