Chicago, IL April 12, 2023. Cindy Hohl, director of policy analysis and operational support at Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library has been elected 2023-2024 president-elect of the American Library Association (ALA).
Hohl received 4,965 votes, while her opponent, Eric Suess, director of Marshall Public Library in Pocatello, Idaho, received 2,409 votes.
Upon learning the outcome of the election, Hohl said, "Thank you to everyone who voted, and I am truly humbled to take these next steps together with all of you. It is an honor and privilege to support library staff across the field, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as 2024-25 ALA President. A special thank you to Eric Suess for standing for election with me.
We have a lot of good work ahead of us in libraries, and I look forward to listening to feedback, hearing your ideas, and moving forward with that inspiration to uphold the professional ethics of our trusted profession as we highlight the high value of libraries. Hohl is past president of the American Indian Library Association and is an active member of other ALA affiliates, including the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, Black Caucus of ALA, Chinese American Librarians Association, and REFORMA: The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking. As a member of the Public Library Association, a division of ALA, she currently co-chairs the Membership Advisory Group and was a member of the PLA Strategic Plan Review Team. Hohl is also a member of several round tables: Intellectual Freedom Round Table, Library Research Round Table, and Social Responsibilities Round Table.
Hohl holds a Bachelor of Science in Organization Management and Leadership from Friends University, a Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University, and a Master of Business Administration from Baker University.
