Québec universities move library resource sharing to OCLC's Tipasa

DUBLIN, Ohio, 1 November 2022—Member libraries of the Partenariat des bibliothèques universitaires du Québec (PBUQ), a partnership of Québec university libraries, are now using OCLC's Tipasa interlibrary loan management system to serve 18 Québec member universities.

Tipasa is the cloud-based interlibrary loan management system that makes it possible for libraries to manage a high volume of interlibrary loan requests, automate routine borrowing and lending functions, and provide an improved experience for students and faculty.

In 2020, Québec university libraries implemented OCLC's WorldShare Management Services (WMS), the cloud-based library services platform with WorldCat as its foundation, which allows library staff to draw on OCLC's shared data network and technology. The Tipasa interlibrary loan management system integrates with WMS for more efficient workflows.

"Québec university libraries are glad to implement Tipasa and give their patrons the best ILL experience with a new system fully integrated into WMS," said Étienne Audet, Directeur du Service de la bibliothèque de l'Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and President of the BCI Sous-comité des bibliothèques. "Today, all patrons need to authenticate only once to access all the services provided through Discovery. Also, Tipasa gives ILL staff a modernized interface similar to that of WMS."

"Implementation ran smoothly with the help of OCLC's implementation team. We are also very pleased with the level of collaboration we have with the Tipasa Product Team for the upcoming enhancements requested by the Québec university libraries," Mr. Audet added.

Tipasa is the best solution to migrate to from its VDX ILL application. Tipasa offers the best automated functionality deemed essential by the partnership. Tipasa automatically sends various pre-configured messages to users in response to ILL requests. And for Canadian academic libraries outside of Québec, Tipasa creates an automated lender string using the partner's knowledge base if this knowledge base is available in WorldShare.

Tipasa is the only interlibrary loan management system that offers an interface in French, both for users and for staff. And Tipasa is compliant with Canadian copyright requirements.

"OCLC has worked closely with PBUQ to ensure that our systems and services meet the needs of their member libraries and their users," said Bruce Crocco, OCLC Vice President, Library Services for the Americas. "PBUQ has been a great partner. Our work together has made it possible to provide essential services to university libraries in Québec and has provided us an opportunity to grow to meet new challenges that will benefit all libraries and groups of libraries."

About PBUQ

Quebec university libraries, members of the Libraries Sub-Committee of the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire (BCI), have been collaborating for more than fifty years. Wishing to take this synergy to a higher level, they have created in 2019 a partnership, the Partenariat des bibliothèques universitaires du Québec (PBUQ) whose mission is to provide Quebec universities with innovative information management platforms to better meet the needs of the Quebec university community.

About OCLC

OCLC is a nonprofit global library organization that provides shared technology services, original research, and community programs so that libraries can better fuel learning, research, and innovation. Through OCLC, member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat, the most comprehensive global network of data about library collections and services. Libraries gain efficiencies through OCLC's WorldShare, a complete set of library management applications and services built on an open, cloud-based platform. It is through collaboration and sharing of the world's collected knowledge that libraries can help people find answers they need to solve problems. Together as OCLC, member libraries, staff, and partners make breakthroughs possible.
