2010, April 15 - Huntsville, AL. Santa Clara County (Calif., USA) Library has just completed installing at three of its branches - Los Altos, Morgan Hill and Milpitas - BiblioChip RFID technology-based solutions, including Bibliotheca's Orion selfcheck stations for library patrons, Biblio StaffStations for easy replacement of barcodes with RFID tags and new enhanced BiblioGate VI 3D security gates at each of the library's outlets. The library has also invested in Bibliotheca's industry-leading automated materials handling (AMH) technology to work with existing sorter hardware. Plans of completing installation of Bibliotheca RFID systems is targeted for the end of this year.
During the first phase of installations, the Santa Clara County Library has replaced its current self-check units with Bibliotheca's new Orion series of stations. By integrating Bibliotheca BiblioChip technology with the library's current circulation software, SirsiDynix Horizon, patrons and staff will be able to use familiar, user-friendly interfaces on the new Bibliotheca stations. The open, standards based BiblioChip solution also provides the library the flexibility to leverage its existing investment in AMH, as the library's current sorter hardware has been retrofitted with RFID readers to enable them to read RFID tags that comply with the Open Danish Data standard.
"Upgrading to the latest RFID technology was an important step for us in improving our efficiency," said Melinda Cervantes, Santa Clara County Librarian. "But what really made Bibliotheca compelling to us is the ability of its RFID technology and staff to work with us to install the latest and greatest capabilities for our patrons and staff, while leveraging the value of our existing investments."
To provide timely, efficient barcode-to-RFID conversion services for all the branches, Bibliotheca has partnered with Library Systems and Services, LLC (LSSI). "LSSI and Bibliotheca make a great team for undertaking conversion projects like Santa Clara County's," said Bob Windrow, LSSI vice president of sales and marketing. "By combining Bibliotheca's world-class RFID technology with LSSI's expertise in tackling major library technology projects, Santa Clara County Library can enjoy the best of both worlds – outstanding technology and an implementation of that technology that's both efficient and effective."
