Hershey, PA, USA – May 6th, 2022 – Academic publisher IGI Global and the University of North Texas have collaborated on the launch of a Platinum Open Access (OA) reference book, The Handbook of Research on the Global View of Open Access and Scholarly Communications. The book is available now, and can be accessed through he IGI Global Online Bookstore.
This Open Access (OA) collaboration between IGI Global and the University of North Texas (UNT) is part of the publisher's ongoing efforts towards furthering the OA movement, and was made possible through the university's investment in IGI Global e-Collections.
According to Dr. Daniel Gelaw Alemneh, the editor of the reference publication and faculty member of UNT, "The book presents global solutions, endeavors, projects, and ideas about OA. Therefore, being published in the same modality it is promoting makes logical sense and will help to spread the word about this form of publication."
The Handbook of Research on the Global View of Open Access and Scholarly Communications explores OA concepts and issues while demystifying the state-of-the-art knowledge domain in the areas of OA and scholarly communications from diverse perspectives as well as implications for the information and knowledge society. This book seeks to provide comprehensive assessment of the extent of OA implementation and a discussion of how to proceed in integrating OA issues from various perspectives.
As a Platinum Open Access book, accepted authors were not required to pay chapter processing charges and have been granted Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licensing. With this, the authors retain the copyright to their published research making it possible to share their published findings easily and without restrictions. This is beneficial for earning increased citation impact as well as expanding knowledge about OA by dismantling barriers, such as lack of resources or budgetary constraints.
"Our ultimate goal is to ensure that research becomes widely accessible and that we are supporting the next generation of research development," explains Mr. Nick Newcomer, Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "This model allows us, as a publisher, to support our staff and maintain our high-quality processes while publishing OA resources, while also ensuring that libraries are able to affordably access the research their patrons need and become leaders in the OA movement."
The release of this title as a Platinum OA book is a small part of the publisher's efforts towards innovating the OA movement. Additionally, IGI Global is working towards expanding OA by integrating with the OA Switchboard, a not-for-profit collaboration between funders, institutions, and publishers to provide essential infrastructure to facilitate the fulfilment of open access strategies across business models, policies, and agreements.
