Press Release: Foundations in Learning [August 17, 2021]

Foundations in Learning's Online Literacy Solution launches latest version with New Name

CORALVILLE, Iowa, Aug. 17, 2021 — Foundations in Learning today announced it has launched the newest version of its online literacy solution with a new name, WordFlight. The company's signature product also will include new, key enhancements for the start of the 2021-22 school year, according to its co-founder, Dr. Carolyn Brown.

WordFlight incorporates and enhances the previous product called the Foundations Learning System.

"Using a powerful learning model, WordFlight identifies the critical needs of students to close their gaps in foundational reading skills," Dr. Brown said. "Next, the model seamlessly and continually updates a personalized plan to take each student to word recognition and fluency."

"By integrating key learning principles into the science of reading, words take flight as students experience thousands of exposures in targeted practice," she continued. "Ultimately, and most importantly, students take flight as they access the power of written language and the joy of reading. We are very excited about our new name, WordFlight, which perfectly connotes how the solution works and helps students."

WordFlight is designed for both developing and struggling readers in grades 2 and above who:

  • are developing foundational reading skills;
  • struggle with comprehension and fluency;
  • read slowly, with great effort and difficulty;
  • struggle with decoding;
  • cannot quickly and automatically apply phonics knowledge to new words or to connected text.

Dr. Brown said WordFlight also is very effective and efficient for English Language Learners, as well as students with special learning needs (dyslexia, special education) — who are among the populations that lag in reading proficiency measures, according to the most recent Nation's Report Card.

A Texas-based educator praises WordFlight for its ability to help students build automatic word recognition faster and feel successful as they learn.

"I don't know of any other way to teach automatic word recognition to the level that this program effortlessly does," said David Lillard, Dyslexia/ESL Coordinator for Quest Collegiate Academy in Jasper. "In fact, I don't know of any other program that builds that skill at all. I can teach the fundamentals of reading, but I can't make a student access that information faster – that's what this program does. It helps build those connections faster." Lillard added he can readily see his students become more actively engaged with WordFlight.

Among the new enhancements for WordFlight for the new school year are:

  • additional management and tracking tools for teachers that support progress monitoring and planning for differentiated instruction;
  • enhanced placement and progression algorithms to better personalize students' instructional experiences;
  • updated rostering capabilities that allow single sign-on enrollment, including Clever library integration for single sign-on access and free student screening.

Dr. Brown and Dr. Jerry Zimmermann, co-founders of Foundations in Learning, have spent more than 30 years studying the needs of both developing and struggling readers. WordFlight is the result of research and product development focused on bringing the science of learning to building reading skills.

Dr. Zimmermann said WordFlight is the only solution that brings the science underlying the development of automatic skills to reading assessment and instruction and helps "train the brain" to recognize words automatically.

"This approach has been proven to succeed when traditional interventions have failed so many challenged readers," he said. "WordFlight develops student knowledge and use of the foundations in a way that allows them to automatically transfer those skills to fluency."
