Press Release: Kanopy [March 29, 2021]

Kanopy helps libraries promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) with new film collections

San Francisco, Calif. March 29, 2021. Ensuring students and faculty have access to materials that are inclusive and diverse is a major goal among today's academic libraries. However, budget limitations are preventing many from acquiring such critical content. According to a recent Kanopy survey of more than 800 academic librarians, 77.2% say DEI is crucial to their streaming video selection, yet 65% report that their current offerings do not meet their students' need for diverse cinema.

To make it easier for libraries to ensure their streaming video collections contain films for people with different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs, Kanopy, a company committed to streaming high-quality films that inspire, educate and entertain to libraries around the globe, has launched two new collections:

  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, a curated collection of over 200 films from key suppliers like Video Project, First Run Features, and Film Movement that cover a wide range of DEI topics.
  • A hand-selected package by Women Make Movies, more than half of which are produced by women from different cultures, as well as by LGBTQI women, older women, women with disabilities, and women of color.

These collections are available for firm ordering and are also included in Kanopy's Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program. Select titles are also available to purchase under Kanopy's new perpetual access model.

"Diversity is extremely important to Kanopy, both in terms of our content and our company culture," said Kanopy CEO Kevin Sayar. "We are proud to work with filmmakers and suppliers to ensure libraries have access to unique and diverse content under flexible acquisition models that meet their budget requirements."
