Association of Research Libraries Names Judy Ruttenberg Senior Director of Scholarship and Policy

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is pleased to announce that Judy Ruttenberg is taking on a new role as the senior director of scholarship and policy. Ruttenberg joined ARL in 2011 as program director for transforming research libraries, later serving as the director of Scholars & Scholarship and then as the senior director of program strategy.

In Ruttenberg's new role, she will continue to advance open scholarship, open science, and research data sharing in partnership with scholarly and research communities. Additionally, she will lead ARL's public and institutional policy initiatives focusing on advancing sustainable, equitable, and barrier-free access to information, while advocating for privacy and freedom of expression.

In partnership with ARL committees, Ruttenberg will create a vision and strategy for the Association's scholarship and policy initiatives. Her work will include leading, developing, and implementing strategies and programs that emphasize the interdependence between institutional policy and practice, and public policy. Ruttenberg will consult with the Association's Scholars & Scholarship Committee and Advocacy & Public Policy Committee, while working with experts and colleagues in the broader research, learning, and information policy community. She will also manage ARL's legal work concerning information policy, and lead the Association's development of resources to support the ARL membership. Additionally, Ruttenberg will direct grant-funded initiatives concerning scholarship and policy.

"Judy Ruttenberg is an incredibly capable professional who brings a wealth of experience and a history of building strong partnerships," said Mary Lee Kennedy, ARL executive director. "I look forward to her leadership as we build on the strengths of the Association and look forward to the contributions she will make on behalf of our members and with the research and learning community."
