Press Release: PTFS Europe [May 18, 2020]

The British Museum has recently selected Koha open source library management system for their replacement library system

London, May 2020. The British Museum has chosen Koha as its new library management system to replace a previous SirsiDynix solution. PTFS Europe has been selected to provide implementation, on-going hosting and support services.

Koha will efficiently manage the Museum's specialised library collection of more than 300,000 volumes. The collection reflects the historic strengths of the Museum's diverse curatorial departments, which are dedicated to excellence in the research of human cultures Ė past and present Ė across the globe.

The capabilities and efficiencies offered by the new open source solution will allow the Museum to deliver an improved service to its users.

Koha Library Management System

The Koha library management system is a completely web-based application providing staff and public users with access to the system through web browsers. The system comprises core modules: acquisitions with EDI, circulation, cataloguing, serials and comprehensive reporting functionality. The Koha online catalogue (OPAC) offers end users excellent search capabilities together with a full range of personalisation services. Koha's depth of functionality continues to develop to meet the changing needs of libraries and their users.

Antony Loveland, Senior Librarian, said "We are looking forward to implementing a new library management system and taking advantage of the flexibility and functionality offered by Koha".

Lesley Jones, Business Development Manager at PTFS Europe, stated "We are delighted that the British Museum has chosen Koha and we welcome them as new customers. They will be joining our diverse and growing base of Koha customers from across the UK and Europe who are hosted and supported by PTFS Europe."

The British Museum

Founded in 1753, the British Museum was the first national public museum in the world. From the outset it was a museum of the world, for the world, and this idea still lies at the heart of the Museum's mission today. The collection tells the stories of cultures across the world, from the dawn of human history, over two million years ago, to the present. Objects range from the earliest tools made by humans and treasures from the ancient world to more recent acquisitions from Africa, Oceania and the Americas, the Middle East, Asia and Europe, as well as the national collections of prints and drawings, and coins and medals. In addition to work in London, the Museum takes part in an extensive programme of loans and tours, both across the UK and throughout the world.
