San Francisco Public Library utilizes Savannah to engage students during COVID-19 pandemic

When the San Francisco Unified School District needed to notify their student body during the COVID-19 pandemic about additional educational resources they knew exactly who to turn to: the public library!

Since 2017, the school district and the library have had a relationship where all students automatically receive a library card. However, this relationship specifically prohibited the library from having access to the students' email addresses. But now the school district has challenged Jack Tilney, Database and Statistics Librarian at San Francisco Public Library with notifying all students of their library card number, how to access their account, and available digital resources via email. Not to mention, there are 61,000 elementary, middle, and high school students in the San Francisco Public School District.

Jack needed to find a way to map email addresses to a barcode or customer record and as he was thinking of his options, "a lightbulb went off in my head and I thought ‘OrangeBoy can help with this'". With support from the OrangeBoy team, the library was able to map the email addresses with each student's library card account. Utilizing Savannah's messaging feature, Jack was easily able to send targeted messages to each public school student containing their specific library card information, how to access their account, and available digital resources. The messages were a huge success with open rates of over 30%!

After seeing how successful the library's campaign was with the public schools, three private schools contacted the library for assistance in reaching their students during the stay home order.
