Kentucky library patrons gain access to genealogy resources

Ann Arbor, MI -- November 20, 2019. Kentucky students and residents now have access to a wealth of genealogical information through Ancestry Library Edition, the world's most popular consumer online genealogy resource.

Thanks to a partnership between the Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL) and EdTech leader ProQuest, about 300 libraries across the state – including academic, K-12, public, government and special libraries – can immediately provide Ancestry Library Edition to their patrons.

The database is packed with centuries of information critical to genealogical research like censuses, vital records, immigration records, family histories, military records, court and legal documents, directories, photos, maps and more.

"The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives is extremely pleased to partner with the Kentucky Virtual Library in making Ancestry Library Edition available free of charge to Kentucky residents," said Terry Manuel, Commissioner and State Librarian, Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. "This resource will be invaluable in conducting genealogical research by providing instant access to billions of historical documents, millions of photographs, and hundreds of years of history. We hope everyone will take advantage of this exciting opportunity to learn more about their family history."

"Ancestry Library Edition is a resource valued by many Kentuckians," said Ilona Burdette, Executive Director of the Kentucky Virtual Library. "KYVL is thankful to the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives for their partnership in making this important resource available to libraries and library users throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky."

"Anyone thinking about researching their family history should start with Ancestry Library Edition," said Jim Holmes, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at ProQuest. "Its rich collection of materials is accessible to everyone, from professionals to hobbyists. Genealogy research is more productive and more accessible than ever before, and we're pleased to partner with the KYVL to help Kentucky residents, students and scholars trace their roots."

KYVL is a program of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. KYVL members can connect to Ancestry Library Edition and other KYVL databases at https://kyvl.org.
