Press Release: EBSCO Information Services [April 25, 2016]

EBSCO Information Services continues to innovate its discovery service using Openstack and Avi Networks

Santa Clara, CA EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO), the leading discovery service provider for libraries worldwide has deployed Avi Networks on OpenStack to create a highly-automated private cloud and cutting-edge software-defined data center.

EBSCO is one of the largest divisions of EBSCO Industries, Inc., a 72-year old company that started out as a small subscription agency in 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama and has grown to a global enterprise with over 5,000 employees.

EBSCO is designed to meet the information technology needs of a variety of stakeholders by developing customizable services and strong user experiences that help libraries and other institutions support their end users. These end users—students, researchers, faculty members, library patrons, healthcare providers, and others—use EBSCO to access research information. The company needs to support a wide range of end users with its services from K-12 resources that introduce students to research, to sophisticated databases used by academic institutions, healthcare providers, corporations, and government agencies worldwide.

Always a technology innovator and an early adopter of OpenStack, EBSCO was looking for a solution to enable automation together with the ability to quickly scale to meet growing demands on its networks. EBSCO was seeking a load balancing solution to enhance its self-service offerings within its OpenStack environment, and achieve the performance it was seeking.

For EBSCO IT Architect Nate Baechtold this meant selecting a vendor with the agility and shared vision to match its goals for the OpenStack environment—one that is flexible and can support EBSCO's philosophy of adopting open source solutions. "Our primary motivators in selecting Avi Networks were the innovative application delivery services, performance insights through deep analytics, and self-service, as well as the platform's native integration with OpenStack components," said Nate Baechtold. "Avi helped to alleviate several pain points with legacy load balancers and allowed EBSCO to upgrade its services and highly automate its processes to roll out applications."

"EBSCO has been growing fast and we have clear plans for working with Avi," said Baechtold. "Our goal is to do live installations in our OpenStack environment and to make it generally available to all workloads in OpenStack. Once that is done, we will make it available for everything - inside and outside of OpenStack - and we will displace our traditional load balancing solutions with Avi. We will look to Avi to give us a continuum of capabilities between our private and public cloud in AWS. Additionally, Avi's support and vision for containers and PaaS solutions like Kubernetes aligns very well with our own."

"We are thrilled to be on board with the EBSCO team to help them accelerate and expand their capabilities and match the agility of their private cloud through Avi's software-defined platform for application services, load balancing, and analytics," said Guru Chahal VP of Products at Avi Networks. "With Avi's native integration with OpenStack components such as Horizon, Nova, and Neutron, we are able to support transformative projects for innovative companies like EBSCO."
