June, 17, 2015 (New York, Tel Aviv) — Total Boox, a revolutionary ebook service for libraries, and Califa, the largest library network in California, are pleased to announce a groundbreaking agreement, which will make Total Boox's collection of over 40,000 ebooks available to 32 libraries in California, including San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, and Santa Clara Public Libraries.
"This is a great opportunity for our member libraries to test a new service model with powerful content," said Susan Hildreth, Califa Executive Director." Making a variety of titles freely available to their patrons, Califa members will be empowered to support economic development in a way that has never been done before. Special focus will be on supporting technical and entrepreneurial communities, but patrons of those libraries will be able to instantly access and read ebooks in a wide range of subjects and genres.
"We are thrilled about this act of trust in our direction," said Yoav Lorch, Founder and CEO of Total Boox. "Califa's leadership fully grasps the advantages of our service, putting at the disposal of its libraries a rich catalog of titles, always available to patrons, with no holds, no limitations, and no expirations."
Paula MacKinnon, Assistant Director of Development and Innovation at Califa, further explained the advantages of the Total Boox model: "We see it as a solution for content that dates quickly, like technical books, which need to be made available instantly. We also see a great deal of value in patrons being able to keep the content on their devices after they've read it, particularly trade reference materials like cookbooks and travel. Patrons often need to refer to such content multiple times."
The partnership with Total Boox makes it possible for Califa to give its member libraries the chance to experience the pay-as-you-read service and evaluate its effectiveness without the need to make hard budget choices. "We never go over budget," said MacKinnon. "If more reading is done than predicted, there is no additional cost to the library. If less reading is done, the money that's left over is rolled into the following year's reading budget."
"It is inspiring to see a consortium of Califa's caliber enthusiastically embracing new possibilities with ebooks," added Lorch. "Total Boox will work hard to meet the needs of Califa libraries and make sure the service is an absolute success for all involved."
