TLC's CARL.X ILS: the original open system

DENVER (June 4, 2014) – TLC continues its longstanding tradition of being the library platform of choice for local development partnerships and product enhancements through its CARL.X ILS. TLC views its customers as partners and routinely collaborates with libraries to support their integration goals within CARL.X through the use of standard technology protocols, including their comprehensive APIs.

CARL.X is a true open system. This highly customizable ILS is in use by some of the industry's largest and most forwarding thinking libraries in the United States and beyond. These library partners have taken advantage of the well-documented API offerings in unique and innovative ways. Today, the CARL.X APIs are in use with the Contra Costa County Library's Award Winning "Snap & Go" mobile service, the Los Angeles Public Library's integrated website and at the Chicago Public Library, where they are using the CARL.X APIs to offer seamless integration with their BiblioCommons Discovery layer.

Having introduced real-time availability with patron service integration to the library industry through one of the earliest discovery layers, as well as being the first ILS vendor to seamlessly integrate their library catalogs with the industry's leading eBook vendors, TLC's fully featured CARL.X system and web service APIs offer a proven foundation to help your library deliver an unparalleled and ground-breaking experience to your community and the library marketplace. Cathy Sanford, Deputy Director for Contra Costa County Library shares that "TLC's forward thinking vision and technologies make them an ideal partner for creating new, local services that help us respond to our customer needs."

TLC continues to understand the importance of sharing reliable APIs that are not only provided to CARL.X libraries to extend their own additional services to their customers, but also invests in its API development by actively using them within the CARL.X product. Designing APIs that TLC uses for its own in-house ILS development ensures that the CARL.X customer base is using the very same APIs that TLC uses every day, and showcases a commitment to their long-term maintenance and support. This unique development philosophy also guarantees that TLC's APIs are regularly tested as part of the overall CARL.X ILS, and will not unexpectedly affect existing functionality with new software releases. "Together with our libraries, we are able to deliver leading technologies and options to innovate with real-time updates and access to library data, where and when it is desired," says Lorrie Ann Butler, TLC's Director of Product Strategy for its Denver Office. "TLC sets itself apart in the industry by including API integration and support as part of the CARL.X core product. This means API integration features are offered without additional costs to our library customers and their third party development partners. This established business model of offering a turnkey system, with customer driven customizations for a single and affordable price strengthens our partnerships, strengthens the CARL.X core product, and benefits the entire CARL.X user community." Through ongoing development and support of web service APIs, TLC continues to offer an open access and open data solution to libraries with the CARL.X ILS, the original open system.
