Softlink conducts fourth annual Australian School Library Industry Survey

Softlink invites school and teacher librarians across Australia to participate in the 2013 Australian School Library Survey.

Since 2010, the annual Australian School Library Survey has revealed a positive link between literacy results and school library resourcing levels. Specifically, the survey found schools with higher than the national average NAPLAN reading literacy scores received above average levels of library funding and staffing.

Softlink's Chief Operating Officer, Mr Nathan Godfrey said the survey analysed the relationship between literacy levels and library funding as well as ongoing challenges faced by Australia's primary, secondary and K-12 schools (government, catholic and independent).

"Our schools are under more pressure than ever to perform," Nathan said. "Yet despite increasing demands to improve literacy levels and integrate the latest digital resources, school library budgets and resources are declining."

Nathan said the findings from past reports had been used to represent the industry in the Australian Parliament, and in discussions with federal and state government and education department decision-makers. Results have also been reported by the Australian School Library Association (ASLA), the Australian Library and Information Association ALIA as well as other Australian state and international library associations.

Softlink commenced the survey to represent the school library industry and advocate the value of school librarians in the 2010 Australian Parliamentary Inquiry into School Libraries and Teacher Librarians.

"Since 2010 we have continued the survey to gather evidence and advocate the value of libraries on behalf of the industry," he said.

"We look forward to and welcome all Australian school librarians to participate in this year's survey, to ensure their voice is heard and to maintain a high level of industry representation."
