Syracuse University selects the Summon Service for complete discovery of library collections

Syracuse University Library has selected the Summon service from Serials Solutions to provide complete discovery of the library's vast collections – including close to 3 million volumes and more than 25,000 subscription online journals, databases, and e-books. A cornerstone of the Summon service is its unified index, which makes the breadth of the Library's collections discoverable without reliance on federated search.

"We are pleased with Summon's ability to provide unified access to such a wide range of library collections and other web-based resources," said Suzanne E. Thorin, Dean of Libraries & University Librarian, Syracuse University. The Summon index will include Syracuse University Library's catalog records, full-text database content, digital collections, subject guides, website, archival finding aids, and much more. Also to be included in the Summon service is the University's SUrface repository which provides open access to the extensive and diverse array of scholarly, professional, scientific, and creative output produced at Syracuse University.

Summon is an effective tool for undergraduates and for those conducting interdisciplinary research. "It should be especially useful to our undergraduate students, who may be less familiar with the tools and methods for locating the scholarly information required for their academic success," noted Thorin.

Syracuse University Library selected Summon after considerable research and review of discovery services from multiple vendors. Syracuse becomes the latest Association of Research Libraries (ARL) members to select the Summon service which is now the chosen discovery service for nearly 30% of ARL academic libraries.

Recognized as the "Best Enterprise Search Solution" at the 2011 CODiE Awards by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the Summon service offers the most compelling user experience by providing the most full-text searchable content in a single unified index. Summon searches across more than 800 million records which are optimized for discovery using an exclusive match and merge process for content ingestion. This allows the Summon service to return a single, unified result set, with superior relevancy, and provides users with unparalleled options for scoping searches and navigating across large results sets.
