Press Release: Ex Libris [June 23, 2011]

Tulane University transitions to the cloud with VoyagerPlus and selects Primo with its Central Index

Chicago, IL—June 23, 2011. Ex Libris Group, a world leader in the provision of library automation solutions, is pleased to announce that Tulane University has selected the Primo discovery and delivery solution, with its Central Index of scholarly materials, and the bX article recommender service. At the same time, Tulane's libraries are moving their Voyager integrated library system, SFX OpenURL link resolver, and MetaLib metasearch solution to the Ex Libris cloud environment.

Having incurred serious damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Tulane library managers were looking at moving their library solutions to a cloud-based deployment. After evaluating a range of options, Tulane found that the VoyagerPlus package, launched earlier this year, best meets the needs of both library staff and users. This package includes the migration of Voyager to the cloud and the addition of a cloud-based Primo service. Tulane's existing MetaLib and SFX systems are being moved to the cloud at the same time.

"Implementing the cloud-based Primo solution and bX recommender service enables us to offer our users powerful, intuitive discovery tools for accessing our rich collection of licensed resources and extensive local holdings," commented Lance Query, dean of libraries and academic information resources. "Our students and faculty will have the flexibility to personalize their discovery of information resources best suited to their needs."

Andy Corrigan, associate dean of the libraries, noted: "After a careful review of alternative discovery options, we decided to select Primo because of its rich functionality and the advantages that we saw in Primo's integration with the other Ex Libris services on which we rely. That we found still more advantages from our investigation into moving all these services to the Ex Libris cloud made Primo, for us, an even more attractive choice."

Tulane's location in Louisiana was an important consideration in the decision-making process. "Migrating to Ex Libris cloud services made a lot of sense to us, both in terms of gaining significant workflow efficiencies, reducing hardware cost, and enabling disaster prevention. After all, this is New Orleans," explained Pat Vince, director of user services and library IT.

Dr. Query further remarked that "Tulane and Ex Libris have enjoyed a long and successful relationship. The company's passion for innovation is showing: Primo and the next-generation Ex Libris Alma library management service are generating the kind of excitement that the first-generation NOTIS created nearly forty years ago. Librarians, get ready to be rock stars."

"We welcome Tulane University's decision to adopt the VoyagerPlus upgrade package and support the university's strategic move of migrating all its library operations to the Ex Libris cloud environment," commented Mark Triest, president of Ex Libris North America. "It will be a great pleasure to strengthen our relationship with the Tulane libraries over the coming months and years."
