Press Release: LibLime [July 12, 2010]

The Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport, RI is now Live on Koha

Bethesda, MD – July 12, 2010 – LibLime is happy to announce that in early July, 2010 Redwood Library and Athenaeum successfully migrated to Koha and they are now ‘live’ on the system delivering services to their community.

"We are very pleased to be ‘live’ and even more pleased that the transition was accomplished on time with almost no disruption or confusion," said Library Director Cheryl Helms.

The Redwood Library and Athenaeum, established before the birth of the United States, is Rhode Island’s first library and is now the oldest continuously operating lending library in America. The library migrated to Koha from the Winnebago system.

Ms. Helms explained, "We have set up an introductory session schedule for any of our members who may be timid about exploring the system, but think most of them will find it so much easier than our prior system that they will need no help from us." Helms continued, "Koha provided Redwood with a real alternative to the expensive proprietary systems that come with steep annual fees. This is pretty cutting edge for this 263-year-young library."

"This was an extremely interesting project given the historic significance of the library, it's the oldest lending library in America. My colleague, Jane Wagner, did a great job on their OPAC, and the rest of our implementation team did a wonderful job as always," said LibLime Project Manager Beverly Church.

About Redwood

Chartered as a "public" library in 1747, the Redwood Library and Athenaeum is a seminal American institution still serving its original mission of making knowledge and useful learning as lasting and widespread as possible. Rich in the artifacts of its own 263 year history, one of the virtues of the Redwood is that it is really three institutions in one: a library, circulating to its members and serving scholars and students of Colonial, Federal, and Newport history; a museum showcasing a permanent exhibition of 18th and 19th century art and engaging audiences in art and ideas through programming and publications; and an historic building, the first public classical building in the colonies.
