HUNTSVILLE, AL – May 6, 2010 – Bibliotheca Inc., open RFID solutions partner of choice to 580+ libraries worldwide, announced today that the Sunnyvale (Calif.) Public Library has gone live with a range of the company's BiblioChip RFID technology-based sorting, security and self-check solutions, including a 21-bin BiblioSort automated materials handling (AMH) system that represents the library's first investment in AMH technology. These solutions are supporting library customers and employees throughout Sunnyvale Public Library, which circulates 2.5 million items each year.
Bibliotheca's BiblioSort system is designed and tailored to meet the increasing circulation demands and fit within the architectural layout of the library. The system is built for future expansion as needed as it is composed of a 2-, 3-, and/or 5-way module that can be optionally cascaded in different directions and potentially supply up to 256 different destinations. This sorter expansion capability extends to the patron or return input stations as well, allowing up to 10 return stations to be managed. Sunnyvale's BiblioSort system will be fed by two internal and two external book returns used by library customers as well as one staff feed.
Additionally, Sunnyvale Library has installed Bibliotheca's new Orion series of self-service stations operating Innovative Interface's Express Lane software, which allows patrons and staff to operate under familiar, user-friendly interfaces. Stack processing of items, including multi-part media packs, is a key, time-saving feature.
Other Bibliotheca BiblioChip investments include BiblioGate VI security gates, BiblioStaff Stations with patented shielded technology and BiblioChip open-standard RFID tags.
According to Lisa Rosenblum, director of Sunnyvale Public Library, "Our library is committed to expanding and improving library service to the public. So, when we made the decision to invest in RFID, we knew that investment really wasn't just about technology. Our investment is about ensuring that the self-service options in our library run more efficiently and effectively to better serve our customers and employees. By going from 50% self-service with barcodes to 90% self-service with Bibliotheca RFID, in addition to providing faster check-in, we are able to re-shelve items more quickly, thereby providing faster access to collections and better service to our patrons."
"We knew from the start that return on investment in RFID technology was critical to Sunnyvale Public Library, just as it is for all our customers," said Lamar Jackson, president and CEO of Bibliotheca Inc. "Now that Sunnyvale's Bibliotheca systems are online, we are excited to work with library management and staff to make this ROI a reality, while taking library patron service to new heights for one of the highest individual circulating libraries in all of California."
