About Redwood
Chartered as a publik library in 1747, the Redwood Library and Athenĉum is a seminal American institution still serving its original mission of making knowledge and useful learning as lasting and widespread as possible. Rich in the artifacts of its own 263 year history, one of the virtues of the Redwood is that it is really three institutions in one: a library, circulating to its members and serving scholars and students of Colonial, Federal, and Newport history; a museum showcasing a permanent exhibition of 18th and 19th century art and engaging audiences in art and ideas through programming and publications; and an historic building, the first public classical building in the colonies.
