Blacksburg, Virginia, U.S.A.—VTLS Inc. announces that the Jose Alvarado Library at the School of Library Science is the first of seven sites to install VTLS integrated library software at the Universidad Autônoma de Nuevo Leon (U.A.N.L.) located in Monterrey, Mexico. The system is running under the HP-UXR operating system on a Hewlett-Packard 9000/F20 and supports eight microcomputers, four of which are for public access. The library has chosen VTLS Intelligent Workstation software, a front-end to the online public access catalog, to run on the machines used for public access.
The library has installed the following subsystems of the basic VTLS software package: online public access catalog, cataloging, circulation, serials control, and acquisitions and fund accounting.
In addition to the School of Library Science, six other sites, all located on U.A.N.L.'s urban campus, will install VTLS on HP 9000 Series 800 machines over the next six months: the Presidential Library, consisting of 15 libraries sharing one server (G40); the Health Science Campus, consisting of seven libraries sharing one server (G40); the Mederos Campus, consisting of six libraries sharing one server (G30); the Mathematics Library Consortium, consisting of 15 libraries sharing one server (G40); the Linares Campus, consisting of four libraries sharing one server (G30); and the Economics Library, consisting of two libraries sharing one server (F20).
Two of the libraries will also be installing the VTLS InfoStation, a multimedia information access system that serves as a front end to the online public access catalog.
All 49 libraries will be linked in a Cooperative Network that can support 488 concurrent users. Future plans call for network services to be available at the regional and state level, involving industry as well as other universities.
Jack Bazuzi, VTLS corporate vice president and director of international operations said, "VTLS is very pleased to be part of this ambitious plan to automate the libraries of the U.A.N.L and the Presidential Library of President Salinas. We look forward to a long-term and successful partnership with U.A.N.L. and other libraries in Mexico."
The School of Library Science at U.A.N.L. forms part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, which was founded in 1951.
