Blacksburg, Virginia, U.S.A.—VTLS Inc. has installed the UNIX version of the VTLS integrated library automation software at four sites in Mexico, with three more sites in that country scheduled for installation at the end of February. In addition, VTLS Inc., in conjunction with its Middle Eastern agent Al Hasseb, has signed a contract with the United Arab Emirates University to automate its library with VTLS running on an IBM RISC System/6000 Model 370 computer under the AIX operating system and using the ORACLE database management system.
The seven VTLS sites in Mexico are located on the main or branch campuses of the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey. All the systems will run under the HP-UX operating system on Hewlett-Packard 9000 Series 800 computers and will use the ALLBASE database management system. The four libraries currently using VTLS are Health Sciences, Capillia Alfonsina, School of Library Science, and Mathematics Consortium.
The implementation of VTLS in the United Arab Emirates will support the Arabic character set. English and Arabic will coexist in the software, in the user interface as well as the MARC record, and users will be able to switch interactively between languages.
