Texas State University-San Marcos enhances library technology with Millennium

Emeryville, CA—The Company announced today that the Albert B. Alkek Library at Texas State University-San Marcos will install the Millennium integrated library technology platform with the goal of enhancing its administrative and service capabilities. The library will be using a number of Millennium's tools including WebPAC Pro for next-generation Internet access to Library resources, Inventory Express for quick acquisitions processing, and Electronic Resource Management to streamline management of subscription resources and their presentation to users in the online catalog.

A Leap Forward for Technical Processing Staff

"The new Millennium system will give our technical support staff a lot more functionality and access control," says Library System Coordinator Leslie Fatout. "Cataloging staff are impressed by the cut-and-paste ease of the Millennium editor and its ability to run quick reports with Create Lists."

To further boost the speed of technical processing, the Library will start using Inventory Express' capability for real-time, simultaneous access to multiple book vendors along with automatic duplicate-checking of the Millennium database. Because Inventory Express is fully integrated with Millennium, acquisitions staff can access item pricing and availability information directly inside the acquisitions module, speeding the process and allowing more informed purchasing decisions.

Millennium will also provide staff with management reports that are easy to run without the need of programmers. "Reports are so much simpler in Millennium," says Fatout. "In the past we had to limit statistical gathering and database reporting to one staff member because this function required a significant amount of training and practice. Now other staff will be able to do it for themselves and with greater frequency."

The Next Stage in Library Public Access

"For public service we needed greater flexibility in a number of areas," says Fatout. "We needed sophisticated rules-handling in circulation to deal with a cadre of folks on campus that include undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, adult learners, and off-campus students." Library staff will be able to use Millennium circulation to associate patron types with various circulation functions to cue the front-desk staff to take specific actions to help protect the collection and serve patrons more effectively.

With WebPAC Pro, library patrons will also be able to easily limit their searches by location and material type. "We needed reliable and flexible indexing to improve Web access to the Library's resources," says Fatout. "After looking at several different library systems, we felt that WebPAC Pro would provide the best balance of customizability and functionality. We're also excited about how built-in personalization features (My Millennium) will help our patrons to manage their interactions with us more effectively with email alerts, online requesting, and so forth." WebPAC Pro, available with the 2006 Release of Millennium, also allows RightResult for easier discovery of relevant articles in the catalog, inbound RSS feeds, and flexibility in presenting both the catalog home page and bibliographic records.

In order to make patron access to the library even simpler, the University will use the Millennium's External Patron Verification product so library users can sign into their accounts or subscription databases with the same password that unlocks other campus e-services.
