VTLS Announces VITAL 2.1

Blacksburg, VA – The VITAL product is continuing to maintain its leadership position for repository products throughout the profession with the just-announced VITAL Version 2.1. The new release features extensive new functionality, including:

  1. Collections Management – supports the sequestering of repository objects into defined collections. Management tools allow for like content to be grouped as an institution desires (by academic department, content type, research unit, etc.) and provide end-users with the ability to search and browse these collections.
  2. Advanced Search Interface – enhanced filtering against repository metadata is leveraged by a robust search interface. Supporting unlimited search elements, users can target specific metadata elements, collections, resource types, etc., can limit results with relevant filters such as ‘Peer Reviewed' and ‘Full Text Only'. Users have enhanced control over search results counts and ordering.
  3. OpenURL Support – objects without locally stored datastreams can be modified to search against an institution's OpenURL server for link resolving.
  4. Citation Export – researchers can choose to build citations directly from an object and export as plain text or in a standard format such as EndNote.
  5. Web Portal Enhancements – improvements to the patron display portal include:
    • Browse Support – support for browsing of repository content (Author, Title, Collection, Resource Type, etc.).
    • Enhanced Image Navigation – enhanced support for JPEG2000 and MrSID large image files, including ‘live' navigation at increased zoom levels.
    • Support for metadata tracings – allows for linking of metadata fields to a ‘canned' repository search (Author, Subject, etc.).
    • Support for content highlights – allows for institution to showcase certain content and note new content.
  6. Web Self-submission of diverse content types – integration of VALET 1.1 Web Self-submission allows for submission by an institution's contributors of various content such as ETDs, journal articles, conference papers, etc.
