Press Release: Polaris Library Systems [November 02, 2005]

Five more GALAXY libraries migrate to Polaris ILS

SYRACUSE, New York, November 2, 2005 -- Polaris Library Systems announced today that five GALAXY libraries in Mississippi, Kentucky and Indiana will migrate to the Polaris Integrated Library System, joining the more than 100 former GALAXY libraries that have already upgraded. The latest libraries to select Polaris are Pine Forest Regional Library (MS), Hardin County Public Library (KY), Waynesboro-Wayne County Library System (MS), Bolivar County Library System (MS) and Pendleton Community Library (IN). Hardin County, Waynesboro-Wayne County and Bolivar County will be using Polaris Hosted, relying on Polaris Library Systems staff for technical and system administration.

Pine Forest Regional Library, Mississippi

Headquartered in Richton, the Pine Forest Regional Library provides public library service to the residents of Covington, Greene, Perry, and Stone counties from twelve library locations. The library has a collection of approximately 110,000 items and an annual circulation of 185,500. In addition to implementing Polaris PowerPAC, Circulation (including offline circulation), Patron Services, SIP2, Cataloging (including import/export and authority control), Z39.50 client and server, System Administration, and System Reports, the library will use the Polaris PowerPAC Children’s Edition and collection agency services from Unique Management Services. They will run Polaris ILS on a Dell PowerEdge 2800, with 37 concurrent users.

Pendleton Community Library, Indiana

Located 20 minutes north of Indianapolis, Pendleton has a population of around 3,100 and is one of only two Indiana communities listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. With a collection of 80,000 items and an annual circulation of 140,000, the Pendleton Community Library provides service to residents of the town of Pendleton and of Fall Creek, Green, and Adams townships. The library will use thin clients to access Polaris ILS and will install a Polaris ExpressCheck station to provide their patrons with a self-service option. Their Polaris PowerPAC will include the Children’s Edition and enhanced data (book jacket images, tables of contents, reviews, etc.) from Syndetic Solutions. The library will utilize 27 concurrent workstations and run Polaris on a Dell PowerEdge 2800.

Three Libraries Opt for Polaris Hosted

Three library systems have elected to use the hosted version of Polaris ILS instead of installing and managing the system onsite. This enables them to upgrade to the advanced technology of Polaris without having to utilize their own staff to administer the system. With Polaris Hosted, the staff of these busy libraries will be able to focus on serving patrons rather than running an ILS.

  • Hardin County Public Library, Kentucky. The Hardin County Public Library was established as a county library in December 1958 and opened to the public a little over a year later in rented quarters. Today the library operates out of a new building finished in 2002, a branch location, and a bookmobile. Hardin County will use Syndetic Solutions for enhanced data and Polaris Outreach Services to manage circulation to homebound patrons and institutions. They also will use Polaris ZMARC as their source of bibliographic records for cataloging. Polaris ZMARC provides affordable access to more than 14 bibliographic databases developed and maintained by Auto-Graphics. The databases total nearly 60 million bibliographic records. Hardin County has a collection of 94,000 items and annual circulation of 220,000,
  • Waynesboro-Wayne County Library System, Mississippi. The Waynesboro-Wayne County Library System has an annual circulation of 63,000 items. In addition to the core Polaris ILS, Waynesboro-Wayne County will use the Polaris PowerPAC Children’s Edition and enhanced data from Syndetic Solutions.
  • Bolivar County Library System, Mississippi. Located in western Mississippi along the Mississippi River, the Bolivar County Library System serves the county residents with a main library and seven library branches. Annual circulation is approximately 200,000 from a collection of 100,000 items.
