Las Vegas-Clark County Library District selects Millennium to meet service goals

Emeryville, CA—Innovative Interfaces announced today that the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District has selected Millennium as its new integrated library management system. To find the best system possible for the District, Executive Director Daniel L. Walters formed a committee to create a vision for the required solutions. The committee identified three areas that would help the District cope with an ever-growing user base. They included: e-commerce for patron credit card transactions, patron participation or self-service, and better integration of electronic resources. In support of these goals, the District will implement several optional modules including Innovative's Ecommerce, Graphical Self Check-Out for do-it-yourself circulation at PC workstations, and the market-leading Electronic Resource Management. "Innovative Interfaces was the clear leader for the majority of the committee members," says Walters.

Meeting Growing Demand

"Our District is always growing," says Director of Marketing and Community Relations Pat Marvel. "We have approximately 5,000 new residents a month and, since the year 2000, our circulation has increased 105%. We wanted to accommodate this growth in all ways possible and believe that Innovative's work on products like Graphical Self Check-Out will help our system deal with high volume." Las Vegas-Clark County also selected Patron Self-Registration that allows new users to apply for library cards online. "With so many folks using our website to get situated in a new area and using our site as their first point of contact with us, we feel that Patron Self-Registration will be an important addition to our services."

"Our staff likes how customizable the Innovative online catalog, the Web OPAC, seems to be," says Robb Morss, Deputy Director/COO at the District. "The combination of this flexibility with its English and Spanish user interfaces will help us give our users the highest level of usability possible."

Electronic Resource Management at the Public Library

Las Vegas-Clark County recognized early on the need for Innovative's Electronic Resource Management. "Our research database usage has gone up and this trend appears to be continuing," says Morss. "Patrons are using them for homework help, personal use, to research newspaper articles, genealogy, and to find health care information. Electronic Resource Management is key to our service goals. Our community has grown tremendously so managing our e-resources is very important. We want patrons to have a 'one-stop shopping' experience with us, and that is enhanced by the integration of the Innovative ERM and the company's online catalog."

The Need for Staff Efficiency

"It's critical that our acquisitions processes are as efficient as possible," says Morss. "Because we practice centralized collection development and acquisitions represent 20% of the operating budget, we need a system that tracks these complex interactions and helps us make sure that we get the materials for our patrons without delays or glitches. During the demonstration of Millennium, our staff were very impressed with the Acquisitions and Cataloging modules and thought they were best suited to the job we have to do."

Impressions of Innovative

"Our staff were also impressed by the knowledge and level of preparation of the Innovative staff," says Morss. "During the demo, we were able to see how much their products had progressed in the market. It was also important to us that libraries had actually implemented these tools. The District's new Three Year Strategic Service Plan aims to make the most of existing infrastructure and provide service that is even better than we are providing now. We think that Innovative will be the best partner for this over the next three year period."
