PROVO, Utah—August 11, 2004—Nearly 80 Dynix customers assembled in Edinburgh for the 2004 UK User Group Conference July 7-9, achieving the highest attendance the conference had seen in many years. Customers were joined by Dynix staff from the United Kingdom and from the United States for the three-day conference, which provided opportunities to attend product previews, strategic company presentations, and workshops on a wide range of topics.
Following a welcome address from the User Group Committees, the conference kicked off with a keynote presentation from Dynix President and CEO Jack Blount, entitled "Vision for the Future". He reviewed the company's current worldwide success and previewed major developments of the Horizon Information Management System. Blount was joined by Mark Carden, Dynix Vice President and General Manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
"I congratulate our user group committee members for their outstanding efforts and hard work in organizing such a successful conference," Carden said. "We were very impressed by the turnout and appreciated the opportunity to interact with a large number of customers. We were encouraged by the excitement expressed by customers regarding our future plans and were pleased that so many customers benefited from the educational sessions provided."
Throughout the conference, workshops were presented by both Dynix staff and customers, covering topics that included email notices, consortia, Horizon Web Reporter, smart cards, Horizon Information Portal, security, and the migration path to Horizon. A well-attended presentation covering Advanced SQL was also presented via video link from the Dynix office in Canada. Additionally, customers were able to meet with a number of companies exhibiting at the conference, and product presentations were given by D-Tech Direct, Lorensbergs Communications, and Bowker.
"The conference was excellent, very well organised, and of great benefit not only for customers but also for Dynix," said Law Librarian James Castle from the London office of leading international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. "Dynix is very open to ideas and stands out as one of the most approachable firms in the industry."
The conference was also attended by Jim Rosachi, immediate past-president of Customers of Dynix, Inc., who discussed last year's successful merger of the Dynix user groups in the United States. Rosaschi also presented a session on Horizon Wireless Gateway, a Dynix product that uses Bluesocket technology to provide a leading wireless networking solution. Rosaschi cooperated with Dynix and Bluesocket in the development of Horizon Wireless Gateway when the product was implemented earlier this year at Sonoma County Library (Santa Rosa, California), where he serves as Manager of Technical Services.
The conference closed with Dynix UK Operations Manager Carol Ellis presenting 10-year-customer awards to the American College of Greece, Barnsley Public Library, Central Science Laboratory, Lambeth College, London Borough of Newham, Newham College of Further Education, London Borough of Brent and Lambeth Palace. A special presentation was also made to DUG Chair Lesley Ray, who is stepping down after many years of hard work for the user group.
"The 2004 DUG/HUG Conference showed once again why it continues to be one of the best annual events on the library calendar," Ray said. "As an opportunity to talk with Dynix staff, see new products and network with old and new friends in all sectors of the library world, it is a conference that should not be missed."
