Blacksburg, VA - VTLS is pleased to announce that Vancouver Community College (VCC) has selected the Virtua Integrated Library System to deliver enhanced services to the VCC community as part of an ambitious growth plan over the next four years. Vancouver Community College is British Columbia's largest college, serving 25,000 full and part-time students a year in health, hospitality, business, English as a Second Language, adult basic education, career access, trades and technology.
VCC will become the first academic library in Canada to implement Virtua using the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) hierarchical cataloguing model, a fresh approach to traditional cataloguing that features a more intuitive way of organizing and retrieving information. With FRBR, VCC users will only have to search once to retrieve all related materials, even if those materials are catalogued in different languages or editions, or with different subject headings.
Vancouver Community College will also be able to offer increased outreach services based upon Virtua's strong UnicodeTM foundation including multi-lingual catalogue interfaces and library correspondence. In addition, a host of patron empowerment capabilities will be available to the VCC community including update notifications, room, equipment, and media bookings as well as online requests, renewals, and fine payments.
VCC will be utilizing Virtua's sophisticated three-tier client/server architecture and open database design to provide increased integration with the institution's information management systems. Virtua will facilitate the exchange of information with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as SCT Banner, as well as provide single sign-on capability with the college's upcoming campus portal system.
In addition to implementing the Virtua ILS, Vancouver Community College will also be Canada's first beta-test partner for two new products. The first is the VERIFY Electronic Resource Management system. Based upon the Digital Library Foundation's Electronic Resource Management Initiative, VERIFY provides a flexible and efficient means of managing electronic resources including full workflow and approvals process from trial, selection, order, and contracting, to installation, licensing, training, and public accessibility. The second product will be the newly integrated WebCheckout media booking system from onShore Development. This product features rich functionality for handling all the media needs of institutions, regarding equipment, rooms, personnel and media titles.
