VIRTUA selected for New York University and its consortium libraries

Blacksburg, VA - VTLS Inc. announced today that the Division of Libraries at New York University (NYU), one of the largest and most well respected academic research libraries in the world, has chosen Virtua as the future library automation solution for the University and its consortium libraries.

Founded in 1831, NYU is the largest private university in the United States with an enrollment of more than 48,000 students. The University, which includes 14 schools and colleges, occupies six major centers in Manhattan and has numerous programs throughout the world. NYU's Division of Libraries is currently ranked 17th within the 2002-03 ARL membership criteria index. NYU's Division of Libraries provides library automation services for the member libraries of The Research Library Association of South Manhattan, which includes the three libraries of the New School University Library system and the library of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. The catalog contains over 4.5 million volumes, and also includes records for the New York School of Interior Design and The New-York Historical Society. NYU's striking, 12-story Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, the flagship of the University's eight-library system, houses more than 3.3 million volumes, 29 thousand journals, and over 5 million microforms. The library provides access to more than 16,000 electronic resources both on-site and to the NYU community around the world via the Internet. The Library is visited by more than 6,400 users per day and circulates nearly one million books annually.

NYU performed a very thorough evaluation of the integrated library system marketplace and found that Virtua provided the consortium with what they needed: a product deeply rooted in standards such as UNICODE, support for the MARC Holdings format, core modules like the Vectors iPortal built to be both functional and flexible enough to support NYU specific workflows and a system architecture based on Oracle that will grow with the needs of the University community.

"The NYU Division of Libraries is committed to providing its students, faculty and researchers with customized and convenient access to our research collections," said Carol A. Mandel, Dean of the Division of Libraries at New York University. "Virtua's powerful, flexible design delivers this access in integration with our rich electronic library environment. In addition, Virtua's compliance with standards critical to the operation of an institution like ours made VTLS the ideal choice for NYU and the consortium of libraries. The extraordinary growth of the University's academic programs in recent years, along with the rapid expansion of electronic information resources, necessitates forward-thinking technology in our library system. We found that VTLS shared this direction and has moved innovation into product initiatives that match our vision for information delivery to our community."

"Since my arrival at VTLS, many industry pundits have noted that this milestone would mark a significant accomplishment for the company, the product and for other ARL institutions seeking new alternatives in library automation solutions," said Carl Grant, President and COO of VTLS, "So it is in conjunction with the team of VTLS that we express our thanks to the team of New York University for showing tremendous leadership in looking beyond the traditional choices and seeing the power Virtua has to offer a leading institution like theirs. We are deeply grateful and look forward to making NYU a showcase installation."
