LOUIS — May 24, 2004 — Sirsi Corporation, celebrating 25 years of delivering technology "firsts" to the library community, announced today that the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez has selected Sirsi information technology to help the library meet the educational and research demands of its students and faculty. "The mission of the library is to provide information and research services to our academic community, as well as to the community at large," said library director Irma N. Ramírez. "As a busy organization, the library faces many exciting and diverse challenges, and we know that Sirsi will help us meet these challenges - by expanding our online system, improving the research skills of our students, meeting the information needs of our faculty, enhancing our Web offerings, and digitizing selected library materials."

The Mayagüez Campus General Library consists of the Main Library, one special departmental collection, and an Educational Technology Unit. The library provides resources and services related to the particular curricula offered and the research conducted on campus. Subject interests are: engineering, agriculture, animal industries, arts, natural and applied sciences and technology, energy, marine and environmental sciences.
Although the library's primary interest is to provide services to its academic community consisting of 13,000 students and 2,839 employees, it is also open to the general community. An estimate of the library holdings includes: 220,315 volumes of books, 6,704 journal titles, 4,767 CD/DVD, 2,476 theses and dissertations, 258,243 microfiches, 19,232 microfilms, 12,719 micro cards, 584,206 documents, 4,177 videocassettes, 714 films, 687 filmstrips, 8,460 sound recordings, 605 musical scores, 916 sound magnetic tapes, 24,632 slides, and 8,214 maps.
