Ex Libris Announces ARL Customers Pass Half-century Mark: Northwestern University 50th, Vanderbilt University 51st ARL customer

December 8, 2003 — Boston— Ex Libris today announced a significant milestone in the company's six-year corporate presence in the North American library marketplace: 51 members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) are now customers of one or more of the Ex Libris suite of products: ALEPH 500™, MetaLib, SFX, and DigiTool.

With the recent signings of Northwestern University—the 50th Ex Libris ARL customer—for the combined MetaLib and SFX solution and now Vanderbilt University for SFX, 51 of the ARL's 124 members—a stunning 41%—are now customers of SFX. Moreover, 23 of these libraries have also selected MetaLib in conjunction with SFX to provide virtual library portal services and provide context-sensitive linking. This is an unparalleled representation among North America's largest libraries for a suite of Internet-based products, and it is even more noteworthy given that MetaLib and SFX have been in general release for less than three years. The level of penetration of the ARL membership in just those three years can only be described as phenomenal. Worldwide, Ex Libris now has over 450 customers combined for MetaLib and SFX—award-winning products from the Ex Libris Information Services Division.

Ex Libris has now won 20 ARL customers for its ALEPH system during just the six years since the Company opened its first office in North America. The University of Notre Dame was the first ARL library to sign with Ex Libris as an ALEPH customer in 1998, and the most recent was Duke University, which signed in September 2003. Ex Libris' newest offering, DigiTool, which addresses digital asset management, is now the tool of choice for 5 ARL institutions. They are among the 17 libraries worldwide that have opted to go with DigiTool.

“We are truly pleased and honored at the overwhelmingly positive reception our products that have had and continue to have in the North American marketplace,” said Matti Shem-Tov, President and CEO of Ex Libris. “The numbers speak for themselves and are testimony to the caliber and innovation of Ex Libris products. We look forward to continuing success among all segments of the library market, including ARL members, and foresee a full 50% representation among ARL members very soon. Of course, ALEPH is our flagship product, now installed at over 800 sites around the globe. At the same time we find it striking that the majority of the customers for MetaLib and SFX worldwide are new to Ex Libris—customers who have alternative library management systems previously installed but still recognize the advantages of partnering with Ex Libris.”

“The most recent MetaLib and SFX signings, that of Northwestern University and Vanderbilt University, are really exhilarating,” said Jenny Walker, Vice President for Marketing and Business Development in the Information Services Division. “Northwestern, home of the original NOTIS system, has long been known as a cutting-edge site and a leader in library innovation. With the addition of Northwestern to our customer list, Ex Libris is now the choice of 5 of the 6 (83%) Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) sites that have selected commercial linking solutions to date. We see a great deal of symbolism in having this forward-thinking library as our 50th ARL customer. And Vanderbilt University, our 51st customer, is a great place to start our second half-century of ARL libraries. We look forward to bringing both sites swiftly into production so that their users can enjoy all the great benefits of the Ex Libris product line.”
