Atlantis Srl, the Ex Libris distributor in Italy, is pleased to announce that the Università di Napoli Federico II has selected MetaLib, the Ex Libris library portal solution, to create a portal service for the university`s entire user community.
With MetaLib, Università di Napoli Federico II users can efficiently access a large number of heterogeneous data resources and search them simultaneously. Personalized services, such as one`s own resource list, e-shelf, and search history, are available to authenticated users.
Full integration with SFX, the Ex Libris OpenURL-compliant link server, permits onward navigation from records retrieved by MetaLib; librarians configure SFX services on the basis of the institution`s e-collections and policies. Such services, which are dynamically created, can include links to the full text of an article, the OPAC of the user`s institution, preferred document-delivery suppliers, Web-based resources, local information repositories, and a range of other services. SFX services for the university will also be available directly from the native interfaces used to access content.
Prof. Roberto Pettorino, chairman of the permanent Commission for Libraries and Electronic Resources of the Università di Napoli Federico II, commented, "For the past few years, the Università di Napoli Federico II has been dedicated to automating the library and offering on-line integrated services that provide access to catalogs, bibliographic databases, and digital resources. During the first phase of our project, MetaLib will provide access to all the resources available at our university: our OPAC, other national catalogs, abstracting and indexing databases, and e-journals licensed for the whole university or for individual faculties. The next phase will see the establishment of local archives and repositories for instructional materials; MetaLib will constitute one of the digital platforms for our university e-learning environment."
Erwin Linthout, CEO of Atlantis, added, "The Università di Napoli Federico II represents our first MetaLib and SFX installation in Italy. We are confident that the implementation team, which consists of a highly dedicated group of people, will be able to provide their users with top-quality services based on MetaLib and SFX technology. This first Italian implementation will undoubtedly serve as a model for other institutions in the country that, we already know, are planning to create an information portal for their user communities."
