Press Release: Ex Libris [June 20, 2003]

SFX/MetaLib customer base doubles, with 200 new sites in one year

Ex Libris (USA) is pleased to announce the phenomenal success of the award-winning SFX and MetaLib systems, with the signing of eighteen new customers in the last month in North America alone. With these new awards, the global customer base of MetaLib and SFX will have doubled in the last year.

Not only is the customer base growing in numbers, but it continues to amass leading academic institutions. New SFX awards in North America include Delta State University; Duquesne University; Illinois Wesleyan University; Lehigh University; the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research; Mississippi State University; Mississippi University of Women; Mississippi Valley State University; University of Michigan; University of Minnesota campuses at Twin Cities, Duluth, Morris, and Crookston; University of Oregon; University of Pennsylvania; University of Southern Mississippi; Villanova University; and Western Washington University.

A significant number of sites have now chosen SFX as an ASP solution, making full use of the rich SFX functionality without the burden of hosting server hardware. Ex Libris expects interest in the ASP solution to only grow in the future.

Many SFX customers are MetaLib users as well, such as Western Washington University and the Kresge Library of the University of Michigan. Western Washington University, one of six state-funded, four-year institutions of higher education in Washington, has an enrollment of 12,493 full-time and part-time students. Yahoo has named Western among the 100 “most wired” universities in the country.

"We are very excited to welcome our many new SFX and MetaLib customers. These institutions join a rapidly expanding international community of users. The increasing demand for and continued success of MetaLib and SFX are the direct result of the Ex Libris commitment to the development of technologies and tools that enable libraries to manage their resources most efficiently,” said Jenny Walker, vice president of marketing and business development in the Information Services Division.

About SFX

SFX--the original OpenURL link server--is an innovative tool for navigation and discovery that provides users with context-sensitive services that are defined by librarians on the basis of their institution's e-collections and policies. Such services, which are dynamically created, can include links to the full text of an article, the OPAC (for local holdings), preferred document-delivery suppliers, Web-based resources, local information repositories, and a range of other services.

About MetaLib

MetaLib, the Ex Libris library portal, offers users easy access to libraries` e-collections, enabling them to find resources relevant to their area of research and to search simultaneously across a range of diverse resources. MetaLib is fully integrated with SFX to allow onward navigation from records that MetaLib has retrieved. For librarians, MetaLib provides tools for managing today's hybrid information resources under one umbrella, be they local or remote, freely available or licensed.
