The Grolier Club joins VTLS as a new Virtua customer

Blacksburg, VA – VTLS is proud to announce The Grolier Club of New York, New York as our newest customer. Founded in 1884, The Grolier has fostered interest in the book arts for over a century through exhibitions, publications, lectures, and, perhaps most importantly, through the formation of a research library devoted to the arts of the book.

“We wanted to make our historical collections available to search on the Web,” said Eric Holzenberg, Director of the Grolier Library. “Most people aren't too familiar with the extent of our collection and VTLS' Chameleon Web Gateway can help interested parties access this important information.”

The Grolier Club is America's oldest and largest society for bibliophiles and enthusiasts in the graphic arts. Named for Jean Grolier, the Renaissance collector renowned for sharing his library with friends, the Club's objective is to foster the literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books.

From its modest beginnings as a cooperative reference collection for the Club's bibliophile membership, the library has grown to almost one hundred thousand volumes, and today welcomes any qualified researcher needing to explore its collection of books and manuscripts illustrating printing and related book arts.

About ninety-five percent of the monograph collection is still catalogued on cards, but all items acquired since 1983 will be converted to Virtua and will be live by the end of Fall 2003.

"We are extremely pleased that The Grolier Club has chosen VTLS to partner with for the future," said Carl Grant, President of VTLS. “This is an exciting time for VTLS as we continue to benefit from the delivery of visionary products such as our Chameleon Web Gateway, Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and VTLS' Digital Library and Imaging Solutions – all certified to meet ISO 9001 quality standards.”
