Tutor.com acquires LSSI Reference Division

On June 4, 2003, Tutor.com announced the acquisition of LSSI's Reference Division. The merger of Tutor.com and LSSI Reference brings together two high-growth organizations that have broken new ground in providing libraries with the tools to help them meet the changing needs and expectations of today's information consumer. The knowledge each of the companies has gained about how libraries use one-to-one online services will help the Tutor.com Reference Division explore new ways to improve the experience of library users who tap into these interactive services from the library, home, school, or work.

Tutor.com Reference Division Services

Included in the acquisition are LSSI Virtual Reference ToolKit™, Web Reference Services and LSSI Integrated Reference Management System with RefTracker™ as well Servicios de Referencia en Español. LSSI Virtual Reference ToolKit makes professional reference and search assistance services available to library patrons anywhere, at any time, enabling libraries to extend the high quality, personalized services traditionally offered only at the physical reference desk to the growing number of patrons using the Web. Web Reference Services helps libraries respond to patron questions by employing librarians and trained paraprofessional librarians who hold an MLS or MLIS degree.

RefTracker can integrate virtual, email, phone and desk reference services to improve service to patrons and enhance staff workflow. Librarians can track and route questions automatically and save those they want in a searchable knowledgebase. RefTracker can automatically collect statistics on reference activity at all service points.

Servicios de Referencia en Español is a complete turnkey Spanish-language information service consisting of Spanish language reference services and reference collection as well as implementation services and Web programming.

Tutor.com Educational Services

Over 500 public libraries provide their patrons with Tutor.com's innovative, after-school programs –

Live Homework Help and Live Homework Help en Español. Patrons have access to hundreds of expert tutors, seven days a week for one-to-one help in math, science, social studies and English via the Internet. Bilingual students can connect to Spanish-speaking tutors for help in math and science. Tutor.com provides complete service and support, – from technology setup and staff training to quarterly promotional materials, monthly reports and 24/7 customer service. Over 100,000 sessions were completed during the 2002-2003 school year.

Staff

George Cigale remains as CEO of Tutor.com and LSSI's Arthur Brady joins as Vice President and General Manager of the new Tutor.com Reference Division. Steve Coffman will serve as the VP of Strategic Development. A majority of LSSI's Reference Division staff and reference providers are now working for Tutor.com and maintain the same phone numbers and email addresses to ensure that all clients will receive uninterrupted service and client support from the Tutor.com Reference Division.

Clients

Tutor.com with the addition of its new Reference Division now serves over 4,500 public, academic, military and special libraries across the country and internationally as all contracts for services with LSSI's Reference Division have been reassigned to Tutor.com. Clients that offer both LSSI Virtual Reference ToolKit and Live Homework Help include the CLEVNET consortium of 31 library systems in 9 counties throughout Northern Ohio; Q and A NJ, a service of the New Jersey Library Network; the King County Library System in Washington; Denver Public Library; and Multnomah County Library in Oregon.
