ENCompass chosen system for Maine statewide libraries

DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, Feb. 25, 2003: Endeavor Information Systems announced today the University of Maine and the State of Maine Library partnered to select the ENCompass for Resource Access system for providing instant access to e-resources and expanded search capabilities and the LinkFinderPlus advanced linking system.

ENCompass for Resource Access and LinkFinderPlus will be implemented as a single federated search system administered by the University of Maine at Orono to manage and access shared resources for the University system's eight campus libraries and their four branches, plus the Maine State Library, the Maine Law and Legislative Library, and the Bangor Public Library. The project also enables read-only access of the Maine Info Net resources for all users in the state via the Maine Info Net system. This alliance ensures all libraries across the state will have single-search access to the state's investment in e-resources and digital objects.

All of the libraries involved are currently using the Innovative Interfaces Millennium system for their integrated library management system. Because ENCompass is designed as a non-proprietary system, all academic and research libraries can integrate the open architecture of Endeavor's digital system, regardless of their existing software systems. "Our goal was to make sure we had a search engine that was intuitive and easy to use across all databases," said Elaine Albright, Dean of Cultural Affairs and Libraries for the University of Maine. She highlighted the user-friendly ENCompass system's federated search abilities will provide a solution to alleviate their current situation. "Currently, each database has a different search engine, which makes it difficult for our undergraduates to maximize their searches. With ENCompass, we can control multiple access points at the same time, which is more intuitive."

"We have more than 100 databases at the University, listed alphabetically on the screen; how do the students know what to search?" she asked. Albright explained the University employs homegrown software to sort the databases by subject, which does help users, but requires several steps.

"Since we license databases for the entire University of Maine system, and with the Maine State Library make several other database purchases for statewide access, we need a search engine that is easy for academics, plus K-12 and public users as well. We like the way Endeavor's product was presented on screen," said Albright.

"Using the federated search capabilities of ENCompass enables the library to make better use of their existing database and electronic journal investments, resulting in better value for the money," said Sara Randall, Endeavor Manager of Digital Library Product Management. "Additionally, the open architecture of ENCompass ensures Maine's libraries can still rely on the investment they have made in their non-Endeavor library systems. ENCompass is a sound financial investment for libraries who follow the example of Maine's leaders, and recognize the opportunity to add value to their existing investments."
